Description

Discuss, Connect, Reflect: Employing Individuals with Differing Abilities

In the Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo region—many individuals with differing abilities continue to face limited opportunities for meaningful employment. Despite possessing valuable skills and a strong desire to work, these individuals are often overlooked in traditional hiring processes. This session explores how employers can take actionable steps to create more inclusive workplaces by rethinking how, who, and when they hire.

Differing abilities may include physical, cognitive, developmental, or mental health-related disabilities. While barriers such as stigma, inaccessible hiring practices, and rigid job structures persist, there are proven strategies and supports that can help employers engage this underemployed talent pool. Inclusive employment doesn’t just benefit individuals—it strengthens organizations and communities by widening the workforce and fostering innovation, inclusion, and resilience.

This session will highlight tools and resources available across our region. We’ll also share practical guidance on inclusive hiring practices—from revisiting job descriptions to incorporating flexibility through part-time roles, job carving, and customized employment solutions. A featured local employer will share firsthand how their inclusive practices are creating opportunities and driving positive business outcomes.

You’ll walk away with a better understanding of:

  • Why hiring individuals with differing abilities is critical for our workforce and regional economy
  • How to evaluate and adjust your hiring practices to ensure inclusivity and accessibility
  • What types of flexible employment models (e.g. part-time, job sharing, job carving) can support success
  • What local tools, resources, and support networks are available to employers
  • How one regional employer is putting inclusive hiring into practice—and the results they’re seeing

Whether you're just starting this journey or deepening your commitment to inclusive hiring, this session offers valuable insights and connections to help you take the next step toward building a more equitable and inclusive workplace.
